The film follows the journey of an orphan boy, Harry Potter (played by Daniel Radcliffe), who discovers that he is a wizard. Harry lives with his cruel Muggle (non-magical) relatives, the Dursleys, but on his eleventh birthday, he receives a letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
Harry learns that his parents, James and Lily Potter, were killed by the dark wizard, Lord Voldemort, and that he himself is famous in the wizarding world for being the only person to survive a killing curse from Voldemort.
